'A Celebration Of Motherhood' Looks At Hidden Trials Of Being A Mom

MAMARONECK, NY — An honest look at the trials and triumphs of motherhood might just be the perfect way to help better understand the relationships in our lives.

Gender Fair and The Balance Dilemma will celebrate motherhood with an evening of discussion with author Frank Schaeffer and documentary filmmaker Erin Bagwell at the Emelin Theatre on May 3, at 5:30 p.m. The discussion will focus on the challenges of keeping it all together while expected to transform into a superwoman juggling family, work and life. Guests will have the opportunity to meet many of the authors who have been featured by Gender Fair and The Balance Dilemma. Books will be available for purchase through Andersons Books.

At 6 p.m., new mom and Brooklyn filmmaker Erin Bagwell will showcase her award-winning documentary about surviving the first year of motherhood, "Year One." According to a review, each scene of the 30-minute documentary unfolds like an intimate diary entry as the viewer is able to listen to Erin's inner thoughts, witness her struggles and celebrate the a-ha moments as she documents her motherhood journey from pregnancy to her daughter's first birthday. From feeling abandoned when her partner went back to work to finding the courage to seek help with her postpartum depression and connecting with a community of mothers, the film is a story of vulnerability and resilience. Bagwell learned how to take care of herself while learning to take care of her little girl.

The New York Times best-selling author Frank Schaeffer will also introduce his newest book, Fall in Love, Have Children, Stay Put, Save the Planet, Be Happy, which is described as a post-COVID-19 evolution-based how-to for putting living ahead of work. The book is about raising the next generation in a society that devalues childcare, relying on "unpaid labor" and ignoring the needs of the family. His book is supposed to offer a passionate social and lifestyle "blueprint" for changes needed to rebalance work lives with thriving relationships. Schaeffer has authored more than a dozen fiction and nonfiction books, including Crazy For God and Keeping Faith: A Father Son Story About Love and the United States Marine Corps. He is also the host of the podcast In Conversation... with Frank Schaeffer.

Guests will also receive a copy of Schaeffer's new book, along with a complimentary Gender Fair tote bag. The event will be recorded.

Cocktails and appetizers will follow the documentary until 8 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased in advance for $40 or $45 on the day of the show. Tickets can be purchased and more information can be found here.
