KEWAUNEE - Green Bay-based wireless carrier Cellcom has launched 5G in the city of Kewaunee, with coverage planned to expand to other sites in Kewaunee County this year.

5G is the next generation of mobile networks — the acronym stands for "5th generation" — intended to offer significantly faster speeds and response times than 4G, more capacity and a more unified platform for simultaneous multiple users, among other improvements. According to the Cellcom website, its 5G network will be 10% to 15% faster than 4G LTE service.

Cellcom, a subsidiary of Green Bay-based telecommunications provider Nsight, announced last week that it had rolled out 5G in parts of Brown, Shawano and Langlade counties. The press release announcing the launch in Kewaunee said the company will bring 5G to other parts of Kewaunee County "in the coming months," along with locations in Door County and other sites in Brown, Manitowoc and Shawano counties.

“Our teams have worked tirelessly to prepare our network for 5G and Cellcom is excited to deliver 5G in Kewaunee during the early stages of our rollout,” Cellcom CEO Brighid Riordan said in the release. "Cellcom is committed to building our network to serve not only cities, but towns and rural communities throughout Wisconsin."

The company also announced it made improvements to its existing 4G LTE network in the county.

The arrival of 5G is the latest step to improve high-speed internet access across Kewaunee County. The county entered into an agreement in 2020 with Green Bay-based provider Bug Tussel Wireless for the company to build seven towers intended to expand broadband access across most of the county, and Cellcom entered into an agreement with the Village of Luxemburg last March to provide high-speed fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) internet, TV and voice services to every address in the village.

Customers need a 5G-enabled device and the latest Cellcom SIM card to be able to use the provider's 5G service. For more information, including supported devices and coverage area, go to the Cellcom store at 125 Commerce Drive, Luxemburg, or visit cellcom.com/5G.
