Cemeteries of Russian troops killed in Ukraine found near Irkutsk

Both sites are located at the Alexander Cemetery near Irkutsk. One includes 13 graves near the central entrance, while another one consists of 53 Wagner Group private military company (PMC) graves.

According to Russian media, 17 of those buried at the ‘Wagner’ cemetery were from Transbaikalia, 20 came from Irkutsk Oblast, and 11 from Buryatia.

At least 43 of the dead were prisoners, aged between 20 and 62. Their convictions are available on open court databases. At least 17 Wagner fighters were convicted murderers, while the others were in prison for theft and drugs.

Journalists contacted the families of the victims who said that they had no idea that their relatives had been killed in the war.

According to relatives, families receive RUB 5 million ($60,000) for “burial money” if a Wagner mercenary dies.

Another RUB 100,000 ($1,200) is allocated for the funeral itself. If relatives are not found, the Wagner PMC holds the funeral and compensation is not paid to anyone.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov confirmed that Ukraine’s military losses are far lower than Russia’s, he told La Razon in an April 16 interview.
