Center hosting recovery walk

Sep. 26—DANVILLE — STEP Recovery Center is hosting a Walk for Recovery on Saturday, Sept. 30.

The walk will start at 7 p.m. at Temple Plaza in downtown Danville, with the event ending about 8:30 p.m.

The walk, around two city blocks, will start and end at Temple Plaza. Led by STEP Recovery Center, the route will go south on North Vermilion Street, east on Main Street, north on Hazel Street, west on Harrison Street, south on Walnut Street and east on North Street, back to Temple Plaza.

Afterward, there will be a candlelight vigil to remember those who have lost their lives through addiction, overdose or suicide.

This event is in honor of September being recovery month and suicide prevention and awareness month. Sept. 30 is National Recovery Day.

People can bring pictures of their loved ones to sit along the wall. Candles will be lit and there will be a moment of silence followed by a prayer for those who still suffer through mental illness and/or addiction and the families who are deeply affected by the loss of their loved ones. Some candles will be provided or people can bring their own.

The event is funded by Vermilion Valley Vineyard Church and the Vermilion County ROSC (Recovery Oriented System of Care). The event is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend.

Signs will be provided for those who wish to carry them in honor of recovery to help end the stigma of addiction and mental illness. People are encouraged to share artwork at the event as well, that will be displayed.
