Centerville boys’ basketball first win highlights week in Wayne County high school sports

RICHMOND, Ind. — It had been 659 days.

Centerville boys’ basketball defeated Indiana School for the Deaf Feb. 24, 2021. Last Thursday, Dec. 15, 2022 — 659 days later — the Bulldogs won their next game.

'Winning mentality':Centerville boys basketball hoping freshmen can turn program around

Centerville’s 55-41 win over Hagerstown snapped a 29-game losing streak for the Bulldogs, which included an 0-22 campaign last season, and gave head coach Kodi Smith his first win at the helm of the program.

They’re finally back in the win column, thanks in large part to Shea Hollendonner, who scored 27 points in the victory. Ethan Vecera chipped in nine points and dished out eight assists, and Landyn Keiser added seven points.

The Bulldogs nearly made it two wins in a row two days later, as they fell 48-43 to Rushville. Hollendonner and Nate Dickenson led the team in that game with 12 points apiece.

Boys basketball

Northeastern, Seton pick up wins

The Knights beat Shenandoah 55-41 Friday. Keaton Mikesell led the way with 15 points and four steals. Grant Luebbe scored 13 points. Caleb Harmon had nine points and seven rebounds, and Wes Hunt added seven points.

The Cardinals bested Knightstown 56-47 Tuesday. Mason Harvey stayed hot with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Malik Walker and LaMonte Owens each scored seven points. Elijah Falcone had four assists and seven steals.

Richmond, Lincoln split games

The Red Devils started their week Friday with a 71-63 win over Arsenal Tech.

Ryder Cate paced the team with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Cedric Horton scored 15 points. Mason Carpenter had 13 points, six rebounds and four steals. Deante Smith had 12 points, and Gunner Kovach added another 11.

Richmond then fell just short against Connersville 41-39 Saturday. Horton had 19 points, and Carpenter had nine.

The Golden Eagles lost to North Decatur 75-38 Thursday. Tyler Wyles had 16 points and seven rebounds. Logan Vance added 11 points.

Lincoln then beat Randolph Southern 69-58 behind Wyles’ 34 points. Wyles hit five 3-pointers in the game and contributed five rebounds and five assists. Vance had 16 points, 14 rebounds and five assists. Oliver Webb had nine points and seven rebounds.

Hagerstown drops a pair

In the Tigers’ loss to Centerville Thursday, Mason Romack and Cole Tracy led the team with 15 and nine points, respectively.

Hagerstown then lost to Monroe Central 54-39 Saturday. Romack scored 17 points, Carter Jenkins had 10 and Griffin Doerstler added eight.

Girls basketball

Northeastern wins twice

The Knights bested Hagerstown 57-14 Wednesday. Ady Kircher led the way with 21 points and four steals. Ava Mikesell had 15 points, six assists and eight steals. Addisen Mastriano added nine points, nine rebounds and three blocks.

Northeastern then beat Yorktown 50-45 Saturday. Kircher scored another 19 points. Mastriano had 12 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and seven blocks. Juztice Slick had 10 points and nine rebounds. Mikesell added eight assists and four steals.

Hagerstown gets only other area win

The Tigers’ lone win of the week came Friday with their 31-29 victory over Centerville. Before that win were Hagerstown’s loss to Northeastern Wednesday and a 52-50 loss against Union Monday.

Lincoln took a 70-18 loss to Randolph Southern Wednesday before earning a 55-45 win over Union City Friday. Lexi McPheeters led the Golden Eagles with 12 points in the win. Elliott Jones scored 10 points, Addyson Pitcock had nine and Samantha Lilley had eight.

Richmond lost a pair of close games last week, first 46-42 against Northmont Monday and then 38-34 against Arsenal Tech Friday.

Wrestling

Northeastern has strong showing at New Castle

The Knights went 4-1 at the New Castle Invite Saturday. Northeastern earned wins over Rossville (59-24), Wes-Del (55-15), Muncie Central (42-36) and Western Boone (43-42). The only loss came against the host school 42-30.

Centerville tops Monroe Central

The Bulldogs started their week Wednesday with a 58-18 win over Monroe Central. Eli McCoy, Kyle Sheard, Tzuri Phillips, Conner Frazier, Kale Creech, Jackson Marker, Jayden Sticco, Grant Soper, Luke Canarella and Preston Mathews all earned victories.

Centerville also competed in Saturday’s New Castle Invite but went 0-5. Losses came against Muncie Central (36-34), Rossville (36-35), Western Boone (46-33), South Adams (54-24) and New Castle (66-18). Despite going winless as a team, Nathan Westover went 5-0 on the day.

Lincoln splits multi-team meet

The Golden Eagles bested Union City 40-36 but fell to Hagerstown 36-30 Wednesday. R. Riggs, D. Camron, P. Gray and A. Capps all went 2-0 on the day.

Swim and dive

Wayne County’s three swim and dive teams — Richmond, Centerville and Seton — all competed at the Connersville Invite Saturday. Here’s how they did:

Richmond

The Red Devil boys took second place in the invitational. Individual scorers for the team were Cayden Lindahl in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke, Owen Fowler in the 50 and 100 freestyle, Masson Heiny in the 100 butterfly, Ethan Cordova in the 500 freestyle, Ethan Miller in the 200 freestyle and Brokie Morken in diving.

All three team relays also scored: the 200 medley relay of Cordova, Lindahl, Heiny and Fowler; the 200 freestyle relay of Miller, Noah McClain, Cordova and Payne Forrest; and the 400 freestyle relay of Fowler, Heiny, Forrest and Lindahl.

The girls placed fourth with individual scoring from Olivia Bailey in the 200 and 500 freestyles, Claire Reising in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, Bess Scheiben in the 50 and 100 freestyles, Ryan Wagers in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke, Mallory Cook in the 50 freestyle, Abby Shull in the 200 individual medley, Allison Stout in the 100 breaststroke and Addisen Jones in diving.

Prior to the invite, Richmond competed at Muncie Central Tuesday. The boys took a 102-82 win, and the girls lost 123-60.

Centerville

Both the boys and girls placed third in the invitational and won three events.

Jack Kenny headlined the boys with a win in the 500 freestyle and a runner-up finish in the 200 freestyle. Devon Whaley finished second in diving, and Nate Minton was third in the 100 backstroke. The 200 freestyle relay team of Jack Sewell, RJ Ringley, Grayson Jarvis and Kenny finished second. The 400 freestyle relay team of Kenny, Minton, Jarvis and Whaley finished third.

Avery Dickerson led the girls with wins in the 100 and 200 freestyles. Taylor Heaston placed second in diving. The 200 freestyle relay team finished second. The 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams finished third. Those teams consisted of a combination of Dickerson, Heaston, Ali Hemmerling, Emily Kaucher, Kenna Hemmerling and Paxtyn Elsrod.

Seton

The Cardinals’ lone bright spot of the day came from Josey Meeks, who won the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke.
