Central Florida counties provide updates for trash collection after Hurricane Ian

As Hurricane Ian damaged homes and buildings, strong winds and heavy rain paused most trash collection.

We broke down the current garbage collection schedules in a county-by-county list:

Orange County:

Orlando

The city of Orlando started picking up debris and trash on Friday, Sept. 30.

Residents should place trash on the curb, bag yard waste and separate materials.

Residential and commercial trash pickup resumed on Saturday, Oct. 1, including pickups that were skipped on Wednesday. Pickups that were skipped on Thursday was collected on Sunday, Oct. 2.

The Orange County Lanfill and Transfer Stations will be open for residents on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The landfill is located in east Orange County at 5901 Young Road. The transfer stations are in central and west Orange County at 5000 L.B. McLeod Road and 1326 Good Homes Road.

Excess household garbage can be rolled out for collected on the next large item pickup day.

Winter Park

The city is telling residents not to place debris piles in the street, near gutters or storm drains and near structures.

Winter Park said that they will send out crews and equipment to pick up small materials, including sand and leaves, but not branches.

Debris in the street poses a hazard to drivers and crews will not be able to clean around.

Pickup will begin on Wednesday, Oct. 5. Residents should expect that based on the amount of debris, it could take weeks to clean it up.

Trash and debris need to be put in containers or bagged and tied.

Brevard County:

Brevard County Waste Management resumed collection for Friday residential service customers on Friday, Sept. 30.

Residents who have pickups on Saturdays had regular service starting on Saturday, Oct. 1.

Wednesday customers will be serviced on Saturday, Oct. 1. Recycling and yard waste will be serviced on Wednesday, Oct. 5.

The crew will pick up carted garbage, carted recycled items and contained yard waste around 6 a.m.

Waste Management will not be able to service customers who live on flooded or impassable streets. Bulky trash or yard waste will be collected once city and county officials determine how they will pick up the storm debris.

Flagler County:

Flagler County has canceled all garbage collection for Friday, Sept. 30.

Bunnell will resume residential and commercial garbage collection on Monday, Oct. 3.

Palm Coast and unincorporated Flagler County will resume garbage collection on the next scheduled weekday.

Seminole County:

Regularly scheduled curbside trash, recycling and yard waste collection will resume on Monday, Oct. 3. Bins should be put out on the normal trash pickup days.

Maitland

Hurricane debris and household waste collection will begin on Monday, Oct. 3.

Maitland residents should only put their storm-related debris into piles at the curb, not around structures, light poles or utility boxes. By not blocking the roads, crews will be able to easily pick up the garbage.

Household trash will be collected on Monday, Oct. 3. The city is asking residents to not use garbage or recycling containers, they should use garbage bags.

Storm debris should be separated by the following: construction and building materials, vegetative and tree materials, household hazardous wastes and dirt/sediment.

Lake County:

Solid Waste collection services will resume for unincorporated Lake County Solid Waste Customers on Sept. 30.

Collection may be delayed as our haulers work to correct this week’s missed pickups. Please leave your bins out, as they may be collected outside of your regular schedule.

For residential curbside collection of yard waste, related to trees or shrubs, limbs must be smaller than 6 inches in diameter, shorter than 4 feet in length, and limited to 4 cubic yards per week.

Debris should not be placed in plastic bags and used sandbags should not be mixed in with debris.

Yard waste pickup day is the day after your regular recycling pickup day and does not require pre-scheduling.

Residential yard waste that does not meet hauler specifications can be cut to the maximum extent practicable and brought to the Central Landfill facility at 13130 County Landfill Road, Tavares during normal hours of operation. Residential yard waste tipping fees will be waived through October 8, 2022.

Volusia County:

Regular garbage pickup in the City of Daytona Beach Shores will resume on Tuesday, Oct. 4.

Hurricane debris will be collected on Saturday, Oct. 8, and Saturday, Oct. 15.

Residents should separate vegetative debris like tree branches and construction debris.

Debris should not be placed near roadways, near electrical lines or hanging tree limbs.

Sumter County:

No details have been released about trash and debris pickup for Sumter County.

Osceola County:

Residential garbage and recycling collection has resumed. The county will not collect yard waste and bulk trash this week.

Thursday’s garbage collection was picked up Friday, Sept. 30, and Friday’s pickup was Saturday, Oct. 2.

City of Kissimmee

The city of Kissimmee will resume solid waste services Monday, Oct. 3. Picking up and removing debris will be the first priority. There will not be any fees for residents regarding debris and bulk trash pickup.

City of St. Cloud

Residential trash pickup will resume Monday, Oct. 3.

Marion County:

City of Ocala

Ocala’s commercial sanitation routes resumed on Friday, Sept. 30 while residential routes that were scheduled for Thursday will be collected on Monday, Oct. 3.

This could push next week’s collection back by a one-day delay.

Citizens can call 352-351-6698 for any questions regarding pickup.

Residents who have already had their trash picked up during the week of Sept. 26 should not place additional items on the curb.
