Central Kitsap assistant coach charged with furnishing alcohol to minor 'with sexual motivation'

An assistant basketball coach at Central Kitsap High School who admitted to having sex with a student was charged Friday with furnishing alcohol to a minor.

When prosecutors filed the misdemeanor charge against Jaiden Alexander Mosley, 21, they added a special allegation for “sexual motivation.”

The investigation by the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office began in January, shortly after school officials learned of the allegations.

However, the probable cause statement from the investigating deputy was signed on Friday, the day after the Kitsap Sun posted a story about the allegations. The charge was filed in Kitsap County District Court on Wednesday.

In an interview with the newspaper, Mosley admitted to having sex with the juvenile but said because he was an unpaid volunteer he didn’t believe he was subject to the same restrictions on having personal relationships with students as a paid coach.

The district’s rules for volunteers do not draw such a distinction.

Mosley said that when he was interviewed as part of the sheriff's office investigation, a deputy assured him that he committed no crime by having sex with the student and that the allegations would be kept “private.”

In records obtained by the Kitsap Sun from the sheriff's office through the state Public Records Act, a deputy wrote Mosley was three months “shy” of crossing the threshold to be charged with sexual misconduct with a minor.

Mosley told the newspaper that he had continued to have contact with the student.

After learning of the allegations, the school banned Mosley from campus for a year. On Jan. 21 the Kitsap Sun requested records from the district through the Public Records Act. The district has yet to provide any records.

Mosley also confirmed to the Kitsap Sun that he purchased alcohol at the request of a student on Oct. 30 but claimed he actually provided it to an older-looking male who was with the students in the parking lot of the Silverdale Safeway.

One of the students in the parking lot, who said she wanted the alcohol for a party, told the deputy that Mosely expected to “hang out” with her in exchange for the favor, according to court documents.

Not included in the records obtained by the newspaper but included in charging documents filed Wednesday was an allegation from the student with whom Mosley admitted to having sex that he had given her vodka the day they had sex.

The student “said Jaiden also provided her alcohol that night ‘a pint of vodka and margarita mix,’” the deputy wrote.

Mosley had been hired into his role for the varsity boys basketball team, putting him in contact with the female students, by his father, Tarence Mosley, head coach.

Though a volunteer assistant, Jaiden Mosley was placed in the role of head coach for a game in January when his father was ill.

Tarence Mosley, who also works at the high school as a security officer, told investigators he did not know about the relationships his son had been pursuing.

Jaiden Mosley said he didn’t inform his father, as he considered his dating life his private business.

Jaiden Mosley has not entered a plea to the charge and, according to available documents, no hearing has been scheduled.
