Central Regional, Berkeley Schools Weigh Options For Fall

BERKELEY, NJ — The Central Regional and Berkeley Township school districts are working to put together plans for the upcoming school year.

School districts still have some time to formulate plans that they'll submit to the New Jersey Department of Education. Here are the latest local updates.

For now, the Berkeley Township School District hasn't released many details.

"The Berkeley Township School District is in the process of meeting with our stakeholders as a part of our Restart Committee," said Superintendent Dr. James D. Rosselli in an email to Patch. "Nothing further to report at this time."

Central Regional Superintendent Dr. Triantafillos Parlapanides has been meeting with a teacher, nurse and administrative committee to determine a plan. They will finalize their proposal over the next two weeks.

The district must submit its proposal to the DOE by July 30. Then officials will announce the plan to students and parents starting Aug. 1. Parlapanides will hold meetings in person and through Zoom.

Parlapanides told Patch the following about scheduling in an email:

"The first step we took was to go to a 4 by 4 block schedule instead of our previous "A" and "B" day schedule. This means teachers will have three (3) classes for 90 days with the same students. So a teacher will have only seventy five (75) students for ninety (90) days so they are able to build a relationship and get to know students' academic strengths and weaknesses.

"The student advantage is that they will only have four (4) classes for ninety (90) days since many students struggled with Virtual learning. This cuts the virtual classes in half. We are also having a Teachers Academy this summer to share teacher ideas and programs that worked well during the Virtual time period. We need to share the ideas that worked really well for our students. After the 90 days the students will have 4 new subjects for the remaining 90 days of school. This is the first step and once I have reviewed everything with the teaching staff I can then share with everyone else."
