If Thursday’s Central Section high school cross country championships are any indication, the Buchanan High girls are poised for another California Interscholastic Federation state title.

The Bears ran away from the field on the Woodward Park course with a perfect 15 points for their 25th Division I section title.

Clovis North finished with 62 points, followed by Sanger (117).

“They did great,” Buchanan coach Brian Weaver said. “We’ve been working on a few things. A perfect score is impressive and says a lot about how much time and energy these young ladies have put in.”

Leading the way for Buchanan was junior Elle Lomeli. She won the 5,000-meter race in 17:44.05.

Buchanan’s Elle Lomeli is alone in first place as she crosses the finish line in the Central Section girls Division 1 championship cross country race at Woodward Park on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2023. Lomeli won the race and Buchanan swept the top five finishers capturing the team championship.

Last season, Lomeli wasn’t healthy as she fell 400 yards from the finish as she had been dealing with a knee sprain. In the state meet, she finished 158th.

She’s ready to lead the way for the Bears at the state meet next Saturday.

“It’s definitely been a definitely a challenging season so far,” she said. “I’ve had my fair share of hardships and it’s just been really frustrating some of the races because this is my junior year. I want to be as much of an asset to the team as I can.”

Weaver admits his runners faced obstacles this season with illnesses, but felt confident about his team’s chances and health going into the state championship.

It’s a full-go for his team.

“We’re trying to get everyone healthy,” he said. “I think what they did today just showed the direction they’re going. I think it’s a lot of credit to them that they’re out there supporting each other and it doesn’t matter what place they are for the team number. They are for the team.”

Division I boys: Two strong showing for state contenders

Carter Spradling of Clovis East and Teg Pandher of Clovis North appear primed for a strong showing next weekend.

That is because they finished 1 and 2, respectively.

Spradling finished with a time of 15:20.45 and Pandher came in at 15:25.65. Clovis East captured its first section title.

Both runners have had strong seasons.

Spradling has the 12th-best time in the state, while Prandher following at 14th.

“This title means everything. I’ve been working for this for the last four or five years,” said Spradling, who has committed to the University of Missouri.

The senior kept behind the lead pack until pulling away in the final mile.

Other top finishers

Devin Ibarra of El Diamante and Evan Torres of Parlier could be knocking on the state podium, too.

Ibarra took first in the Division II race.

He was clocked in at 15:49.61, about five seconds better than Mauricio Herrera of Reedley (15:46.63).

In Division V, Torres was also dominant.

His time was 15:53.23. No other runner in the division came close.

Yosemite boys looking strong

Yosemite had five runners finishing in the top 10 to claim the D-V race with 22 points.

Central Valley Christian placed second with 53 points.

In the state meet last season, the Badgers finished third behind Crystal Springs and Menlo.
