Poll results: State College swimmer selected as athlete of the week for Feb. 5-11

A swimmer on the State College boys team was the athlete of the week for Feb. 5-11, as selected by readers of CentreDaily.com.

State College boys swimming’s Sam Huggins was a part of three first-place finishes at the Mid Penn championships in Cumberland Valley. He took first in the 200 Freestyle, earned first in the 500 freestyle and was part of the first place 200 free relay team. He and his teammates will take part in the District 6 championships at Penn State on Feb. 23 and 24.

Huggins had 35 votes in the poll, or 54% of all votes.

Below is a look at the other nominees:

Jacee Cunningham, Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy girls basketball: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy girls basketball’s Jacee Cunningham recorded her fourth double-double of the season in a Feb. 6 matchup with Midd-West. She scored 15 points and hauled in 10 rebounds while dishing out three assists and earning a steal.

Molly Workman, State College girls swimming: State College girls swimming and diving’s Molly Workman had a record-setting performance at the Mid Penn swimming championships. She earned four gold medals at the event, with two as part of relays and two as an individual. She won the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle with Mid Penn Championship record times that also set the Cumberland Valley pool record in both events. Workman was also part of the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay teams that won gold. She and her team will take part in the District 6 championships on Feb. 23 and 24 at Penn State.

Workman came in second place in the poll, with 17 votes.

Jackson Romig, Penns Valley boys basketball: Penns Valley boys basketball’s Jackson Romig scored 16 points in an overtime loss to Central and 15 points in a win over Huntingdon for the Rams. Romig is second on the team in scoring with an average of 12 points per game and leads the team in rebounding. He helped the team bounce back from an 0-6 start to finish the year 11-11.
