In the first poll of the winter sports season, a Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy basketball player was selected athlete of the week, according to readers of CentreDaily.com.

Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy sophomore guard Jayden Stamm, who won the poll with 80% of the vote (1,389 votes) was a key contributor in two recent Wolfpack wins. Stamm scored 19 points in the team’s 47-43 win at Newport and scored 23 points in their overtime win against Upper Dauphin to complete a 2-0 week. Stamm is also the leading scorer in the Tri-Valley Athletic Association averaging over 20 points per game in league play, as of last week.

Here’s a look at the other nominees:

Ty Watson, Penns Valley wrestling: Penns Valley added another wrestler to the 100-win club when Ty Watson became the 11th at the school to do so. He currently has the school’s record for falls with 72 and is 17-2 to begin the year. He came in second in the poll, with 293 votes.

Ezra Swisher, Bellefonte wrestling: Bellefonte wrestling’s Ezra Swisher began the season with 18 wins, including placing in three tournaments to begin the season for the Raiders.

He most recently went 5-0 in the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference tournament at 145 pounds, with two wins by fall, one by technical fall, one major decision and one win by injury default.

For the CDT’s Athlete of the Week polls this season, we will take nominations from all six county athletic departments for athlete of the week. Voting for this poll ended Sunday. As a reminder, the poll is not scientific and just for fun. In fact, we invite you to vote as many times as you want. Look for future polls at CentreDaily.com.
