Centreville McDonald’s closing

CENTREVILLE – A fast-food staple for more than 25 years in Centreville is closing at the end of the month.

Jim and Laura Maynard, owners and operators of the Centreville McDonald’s, announced to staff last week the restaurant’s last day is Oct. 31.

“We put a lot of blood, sweat, tears, time and money into (the Centreville store), we remodeled and everything,” Jim Maynard said. “It’s a financial decision (but) I don’t know that I’m comfortable talking specifically about the circumstances … I mean, we’re a franchisee of McDonald’s.”

The Maynards have owned and operated the Centreville store since 2008. It opened in the late 1990s under McDonald’s corporation. The Maynards own and operate several other McDonald’s in Calhoun and Branch counties. They also own the White Pigeon location, their only other McDonald’s in St. Joseph County.

Maynard said the Centreville store employs about 40 people and they have been given the option to transfer to White Pigeon or their other locations outside St. Joseph County.

“We’ll do our best to take care of them,” he added. “Centreville is a great community; we’ll miss being a part of it. There’s a great family feeling in the community and we always strived to do what we could to contribute to that.”

As an example, Maynard referenced McTeacher Night, an annual, one-night fundraiser for Centreville Elementary School. The store also employs a fair number of area high school students, many who counted their work at McDonald’s as their first real job.

Maynard did not indicate any potential or definitive uses for the soon-to-be vacant building.

The Maynards still own and operate locations in Albion, Battle Creek, Coldwater, Hillsdale, Jonesville, Marshall, Quincy and White Pigeon. Their son and daughter-in-law are owners operators of stores in Bronson, Tekonsha and B Drive North in Battle Creek.
