CEO who crashed boat into jetty faces criminal charges

It was just after midnight Dec. 31 when the CEO of multibillion-dollar insurance conglomerate crashed his brand new 42-foot boat at high speed into the south jetty of Port Everglades inlet, injuring the three passengers on the vessel.

Now, Daniel Towriss faces five misdemeanor criminal charges, including culpable negligence and reckless operation of a vessel. Each charge could land him up to a year in jail.

“We intend on fighting the charges vigorously,” said Eric Schwartzreich, Towriss’s criminal defense attorney. “The State of Florida is trying to turn an accident into a crime.”

Towriss, 47, is the CEO of Guggenheim Partners, an insurance giant with over $37 billion in assets.
