Chadwick Boseman gets NFT tribute in Oscar nominee swag bags

A one-of-a-kind piece of digital artwork memorializing “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman is among the NFTs dropped into this year’s Oscar nominee gift bags.

NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, are unique pieces of digital art stored on something called the Ethereum blockchain in a way that makes them resistant to being counterfeited and therefore highly collectible.

The 25 people nominated for Oscars in the acting and directing categories receive the famed swag bags each year, with this year’s haul valued at around $205,000 per recipient, according to Forbes.

Each nominee bag includes an NFT that authenticates a piece of digital artwork to be auctioned off with proceeds going to a charity of the nominee’s choice, Forbes said.

Artist Andre Oshea was commissioned to create the NFT tribute to Boseman.

Boseman is up for a posthumous Oscar in the best actor category for his performance in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”

Funds raised from the sale of the Boseman NFT will benefit colon cancer foundations.

Boseman was only 43 when he died from colon cancer in August.

“The way to immortalize an artist, is to honor them with art,” Oshea said in a Twitter post about the 3D piece he created.

“I was tasked to create a tribute NFT for Chadwick Boseman for the Oscars! Bringing this piece to life has been one of my most challenging & rewarding experiences as an artist,” he tweeted.
