Chadwick Boseman’s Widow Gave a Moving Speech in His Honor at the 2021 Golden Globes

The late Chadwick Boseman won the 2021 Golden Globe for best actor in a motion picture, drama, for his performance in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. Accepting the award on his behalf was his widow, Taylor Simone Ledward, who gave a tearful, beautiful speech. 

“He would thank God,” Ledward said. “He would thank his parents. He would thank his ancestors for their guidance and their sacrifices. He would thank his incredible team. He would thank his team on set for this film.”

She continued, “He would say something beautiful, something inspiring, something that would amplify that little voice inside of all of us that tells you you can, that tells you to keep going, that calls you back to what you are meant to be doing at this moment in history.” 

Ledward ended her speech with “I don't have his words, but we have to take all the moments to celebrate those we love. So thank you, HFPA, for this opportunity to do exactly that. And, hun, you keep ’em coming. Thank you.”

Chadwick Boseman passed away in August 2020 at the age of 43 from a four-year battle with colon cancer. Ledward also spoke on his behalf at the Gotham Awards in January, saying, “He is the most honest person I'd ever met. He actively searched for it, in himself, those around him, and the moment. The truth can be a very easy thing for the self to avoid. But if one does not live in truth, then it's impossible to live life.”

She continued, “He harnessed the power of letting go and letting God's love shine through. He realized that when one is able to recognize that when their strength does not come from themself, they rarely mess up. That's what he was doing when he was acting. Modeling for us a path to true fulfillment.”
