When a storm took out several trees in the Quincy Village Park they could have cut the stumps to the ground and moved on.

Instead the village decided to add interest to the park and contracted Thomas Naegele, a chainsaw artist from town, to go to work.

So far, he's been making progress on a stump that is turning into a cello — a nod to all the music events in the park.

When it's complete, Naegele will install strings on the cello, and on the back will be a mural with music notes drifting upward.

Next, Naegele will carve "Quincy" vertically, on a second tree by the north entrance to the park.
