Who will chair Virginia Beach’s School Board? Members to select new leadership in 1st meeting of 2023

The Virginia Beach School Board will choose new leadership ahead of its meeting Tuesday.

The board will select its chair and vice chair for 2023. Board members Trenace Riggs and Carolyn Weems said in December they were interested in being chair. Board member Kimberly Melnyk said she would be “willing” to keep her vice chair seat if no one else was interested.

However, Tuesday will also be the first meeting for several newcomers who may also be nominated for both positions.

Ballots will be cast for each position after the nominations are put forward. The candidate must receive a majority vote in order to be elected. If a majority vote is not achieved, then the voting will be repeated until there is one.

Weems has been on the board since 2002 and was reelected in November. Riggs’ term ends in 2024.

This comes after efforts to “flip” the board in November, led by the Virginia Beach political action committee Students First VA. The group endorsed several of the candidates, including Weems, for their stance on parental rights in education and other issues.
