Not cool: Pools close as schools open

STAUNTON — At the peak of summer heat, as doors open for the first day of school, the pools at Staunton Parks and Recreation will be closed.

Staunton Parks and Rec director Christopher Tuttle confirmed it. "Historically we close on the day children start the fall Semester," wrote to The News Leader. "Staunton City’s first day is Aug, 9th and pools will close on that day."

With school starting early in August, the pools will be closing in the dog days of summer. Much of the lifeguarding crew are high school students. But there are no plans to keep the pools open on weekends — at least not this season.

WAYNESBORO — Why wait for school to start to begin celebrating? On Sunday, July 30, 1-6 p.m. at Kate Collins, students and their families can meet school staff, complete their school registration, as well as access vaccines and get sports physicals. You can get your hair styled, register for school supplies, and learn about community providers who support children and families,

There will be healthy food and fun and games.

The tricky part is that you have to register in advance for a time slot. Access the sign up page and more details here. There are 50 slots for each half hour, and as of late Wednesday night, slots for 1:00, 1:30 and 2:00 p.m. were already filled. About half the slots for 2:30 p.m. are filled as well. From 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. the majority of slots are still available.

New coach for MBU's Fighting Squirrels women's basketball team

STAUNTON — DeEarnest McLemore was recently announced as the new head coach of the Mary Baldwin University Fighting Squirrels women's basketball team.

McLemore brings with him more than a decade of coaching experience, most recently as the Head Women's Coach at Riverside High School in Durham, N.C.

The Fighting Squirrels have qualified for the USA South Athletic Conference playoffs in four of the past five seasons.

Friday night's free movie at the park: Turning Red

Family Night Flix at the Gypsy Hill Park Bandstand will be showing Turning Red Friday, July 28. Movie time is "at dusk" — usually between 8:30 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. Food and snacks will be available each night for purchase. Weather cancellation line is 540.332.3947.
