‘It’s been challenging’: Californians speak out against EDD wait times, backlog

About 1.3 million people across California are still without their unemployment benefits due to a months-long backlog at the Employment Development Department. A group of residents met at EDD offices in Sacramento, before a California Assembly Committee hearing about the agency’s problems, to talk about the backlog and wait times. “It's been challenging to get in contact with someone from EDD to get some clarity of what’s going on," said Megan Williams, a mother of two from Chico. California lawmakers grilled EDD Executive Director Sharon Hilliard about the backlog and, what legislators say, could be a billion dollars in fraudulent claims paid out by the agency.
