What a wonderful, busy time we’ve had in Smithville these past few weeks!

Last Saturday we were all busily working at the 16th annual Smithville Fly-in. Many kudos to Sandy Meyerson and his crew for the amazing event. Special thanks to Feed the Need missions for the lunches, the staff of the chamber for their hard work on the raffle, sign-in and various sponsorships, Tamble Realty for sponsoring the candy drop, A-1 Federal Credit Union for sponsoring the T28 aircraft brought out by Rep. John Cyrier and the city of Smithville for all its hard work.

The chamber hosted our annual Music in the Park event with five wonderful bands entertaining large crowds in historic downtown Smithville! Last week we closed out the series with the Nathan Colt Young Band and a big crowd who enjoyed the music and the gorgeous weather. Thank you to Smithville Chiropractic for the free hot dogs and chips. Many thanks to our Music in the Park sponsor: Calbri Road and Bridge.

We were so excited to celebrate the ribbon cutting and grand opening of Brookshire Brothers’ renovation last week. If you have not had the chance to take a tour of the new pharmacy area, the expanded deli and seating area, the impressive new fresh produce and fruit section and so much more you are missing out.

The chamber, in partnership with the Smithville school district, hosted the annual career fair for high school students on May 13 at Smithville High School. More than 40 employers were present to talk with students about potential career opportunities and discuss available job opportunities. Many thanks to everyone who came out and much luck and success to this year’s 2022 graduating class.

The chamber, in partnership with the city of Smithville, hosted a community information meeting with the Bastrop County Appraisal District last week at the Smithville Recreation Center. Faun Colins, Bastrop County chief appraiser, gave a presentation on property taxes and answered residents’ questions. You can view the presentation in its entirety on the Facebook pages of the Smithville Area Chamber of Commerce or the Smithville Public Library.

Chamber Executive Director April Daniels is a board member on the Bastrop Historical Commission. April has been asked to chair a task force focused on Bastrop County’s museums and historic attractions. The first task force meeting was held last week in Smithville with the goal of creating a museum and historic locations website, tour and rack card. Representatives of several organizations attended the meeting and future meetings have been scheduled. Contact Becky Osborne at the Smithville Area Chamber of Commerce if you represent a historic attraction or museum and would like to be involved with this task force.

The chamber is partnering with the Smithville Public Library to bring another “Storybook Trail” to Smithville’s Central Business District. The book, entitled “Who Loves the Dark” by Sheri Phillabaum, is a charming tale of a young child lost in the woods who is helped by a wise old owl and learns to love nature and the dark. The new story boards will be in place by the first week of June. Head down to read this tale with your children as you progress from page to page in historic downtown Smithville.
