The Smithville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Smithville Education Foundation were honored to host the annual Top 10% Honor Banquet for the top 10% Smithville school district graduates last week. Seniors also chose an “honored guest,” which is an educator or SISD employee who meant a great deal to them during their time in school. It was a lovely evening spent with proud families and community leaders celebrating these students and their academic achievements. We were excited to celebrate the ribbon cutting and grand opening of the renovation of Brookshire Brothers. We encourage you to check out the amazing new offerings at Brookshire Brothers Smithville.

The chamber is partnering with the Smithville Public Library to bring another “Storybook Trail” to Smithville’s Central Business District.  The book, entitled “Who Loves the Dark” by Sheri Phillabaum, is a charming tale of a young child lost in the woods who is helped by a wise old owl and learns to love nature and the dark. The new story boards will be in place by the first week of June. Head down to read this tale with your children as you progress from page to page in historic downtown Smithville.

The chamber, in partnership with the Bastrop and Elgin chambers, hosted members at the BEST Countywide Mixer at Roadhouse Paige. Many thanks to the Elgin and Bastrop chambers and to Roadhouse Paige for the wonderful food and fellowship.

Mixer: Join us for the chamber’s monthly mixer in Smithville, hosted by the Ralph Land Group/All City Real Estate at 300 Short St., 5-7 p.m. on May 26.

Ribbon cutting: Join us for the ribbon cutting of Chevron as we welcome its new owners to our community and check out the new dining options including pizza and Mexican food. Come out on May 25 at 5:30 p.m., 709 Texas 71 in Smithville.

Chamber 101:  Are you a new member of the chamber or a member that would like to know more about your membership benefits?  Join us on June 2 at noon at the chamber for Chamber 101 where we tell you all about your chamber member benefits and answer your questions about how to access them. Lunch is provided so call 512-237-2313 to RSVP.

Independence Day celebration: The Smithville Area Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the city of Smithville, Smithville VFW, First Baptist Church of Smithville and the Partners of the Smithville, TX Memorial Park, are planning a July 4th Celebration. Head over to the Recreation Center at 9 a.m. on July 4 for a “freedom” fun run, followed by an 11 a.m. parade downtown and a noon lunch (free for everyone) at the VFW. Then head to Riverbend Park for live music, a kid’s water park and fun fest, vendors, beer booth, tournaments, and games. At 5 p.m. the VFW will host an event honoring veterans, followed by more live music, food, beer and vendors until 9 p.m. when we’ll have a 20-minute firework display!
