Chamber of Commerce, Repository and Ideastream to host Canton mayoral debate
CANTON − City residents will pick a new mayor in the November election.
To help residents decide which candidate is the best fit for the city, the Canton Repository, Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and Ideastream Public Media have teamed up to host an election forum on Oct. 10 to hear from the two candidates, Republican Roy Scott DePew and Democrat William V. Sherer II, before early voting begins in Ohio on Oct. 11.
The Future of Canton: 2023 Mayoral Debate will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Cultural Center Theater at 1001 Market Ave. N. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with a cash bar and hors d’oeuvres available.
This is the second election forum for the Repository and the chamber. More than 100 people attended the candidate forum in April that featured the five candidates who had been seeking the Democratic nomination in the primary, which was won by Sherer.
Here’s what you need to know about the Oct. 10 event:
Where will the questions for the Canton mayoral candidates come from?
Questions will come from the audience and a panel of media representatives. IdeaStream's Andrew Meyer will serve as the moderator, and Repository columnist Charita Goshay and IdeaStream reporter/producer Anna Huntsman will ask the candidates a range of questions to gain insights about the candidate’s strategies and aspirations for the city’s future.
Chamber members in the audience also will get a chance to ask questions of the candidates.
If you would like to suggest a question, email it by Oct. 9 to the Canton Repository newsroom at newsroom@cantonrep.com with the subject line “Canton Mayoral Debate.”
How do I get tickets?
Tickets are $20 each and are available at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce’s website at https://tinyurl.com/CantonMayorDebate2023. The money generated from ticket sales will be used to pay for the theater rental and other operational expenses. Any profit will be donated to a local charity.
Can I listen to the mayoral debate later?
The event will be recorded and broadcast at a later date by Ideastream.
