Champaign Co. Crime Stoppers looking for tips in robbery-turned shooting

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Champaign Police Department is asking for help through Crime Stoppers in solving a robbery-turned shooting that left a man hurt one week ago.

The shooting happened near Neil and Green Streets the night of Jan. 14. Police officials said that while the victim was inside a store, a stranger tried to rob him. When the victim became uncooperative, officials said the offender pulled out a gun and shot the victim in the torso.

Police officers responded around 10:45 and had the victim taken to an area hospital. Although his wound was potentially life-threatening, the victim was listed in stable condition.

Police are looking for any video footage that may assist in the investigation. If home or business owners in the area have surveillance cameras outside their property, they are asked to review their footage and look for anything suspicious in the area around the time of the shooting.
