Champaign hair stylist heading to New York Fashion Week

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — One Champaign business owner is heading to the Big Apple as a large part of New York Fashion Week.

Rod Sickler is the owner of the Rod Sickler Salon and Spa in Champaign and has been in the hair business for almost 45 years. This Friday at noon, he’ll help judge a fashion contest as part of New York Fashion Week.

The contest’s theme is “Hollywood Glam Meets Hair Couture.” Eighteen hairdressers from throughout the country will try to impress Sickler and the other judges in bringing high-fashion hair you might see on a Hollywood red carpet to the New York runway. They will do this by presenting their work on one model.

Sickler said he’s excited to bring his personal outlook to the judging.

“I feel really happy to represent the Midwest. You know what, I grew up in a town of 450 people — Ludlow, Illinois, here in Champaign County,” he said. “It’s okay that we can do things too out of the Midwest, that it’s not just about the cities anymore. And I guess I’m proud to represent.”

Sickler said he’ll be on the lookout for hairstyles that work in Los Angeles, California as well as Champaign, Illinois.
