‘Championship caliber’: Weather to be sunny, warm for Chiefs, Bengals AFC title game

Football fans will be delighted when they peek at the weather forecast for the AFC Championship game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals at Arrowhead on Sunday.

“Sunday’s weather will be championship caliber with mostly clear skies and temperatures in the upper 40s in the afternoon,” the National Weather Service in Kansas City said on Twitter.

At the time of the 2:05 p.m. kickoff, temperatures are expected to be in the mid-40s to near 50 degrees and remain steady throughout the game. Fans should plan on wearing shades as it will also be sunny. Winds are expected to be calm.

The nice weather this weekend will be a break from the colder weather Kansas City experienced this week.

A surprise snow event swept through the southern part of the metro area overnight, bringing some light snow Thursday morning to some areas. Little to no accumulation was expected.

Temperatures were expected to climb into the 30s and 40s on Thursday before dropping to the 20s and 30s on Friday. A warm up was expected Saturday with highs rising into the 50s in some areas. Temperatures are expected to climb into the 50s to near 60 degrees on Monday.

A change in weather pattern is coming next week, which could bring Kansas City its next significant winter storm including the chance for accumulating snow, according to the weather service.

A lot of uncertainty remains, including how much snow and where it will fall, so the weather service urges people to monitor the forecast in the coming days and be mindful when making plans for Tuesday and Wednesday.
