Championship teams among those inducted into Smyrna, Siegel halls of fame

Smyrna and Siegel high schools both inducted new Hall of Fame classes recently. Here is a look at who was chosen by both schools:

Smyrna

Danny Brewer

Brewer, a 1985 graduate, was inducted as a contributor to the athletic programs. He has been an area journalist covering the Bulldogs, as well as a financial contributor through his Dr. Automotive business. He has been a volunteer assistant with the school's swimming program and has also volunteered his time with fundraisers and other events.

Pierre Lyons

Lyons was inducted as a coach, leading the baseball team from 1986-92. He became the first African American baseball coach in Rutherford County and also the school's first African American head coach in any sport. He led the Bulldogs to the state tournament in 1987 and has been a teacher, coach and ambassador for athletics in the area to this day.

Philip Shadowens

Shadowens, a 1985 graduate, joined the football coaching staff in 1987 and took over as head coach in 1994. During his reign, the Bulldogs were mainstays in the state playoffs and captured back-to-back state championships in 2006-07. He left as the school's all-time winningest football coach with 113 wins.

2009, 2011 boys bowling teams

Both teams were coached by Candace Lindsay and Donnie Richardson and captured TSSAA state championships, with the 2009 squad finishing 17-1 and the 2011 team finishing 21-1.

Siegel

Shanice Cason

Cason, a 2011 graduate and guard on the girls basketball team, earned all-district and tournament MVP awards and was a McDonald's All-American nominee during her senior season. She led the team in assists, steals and charges before going on to play at MTSU.

Gerald Howse Jr.

The late Howse, a 2010 graduate, excelled at both track and field and football. He rushed for 1,072 yards and nine TDs, earning all-area and All-Midstate honors his senior season. He finished his career as Siegel's all-time leading rusher. He later went on to excel at Oklahoma A&M and Georgia State before earning awards as a college assistant coach.

Stephen Hurt

Hurt, a 2011 graduate, excelled on the boys basketball team, where he was named all-region in both 2010 and 2011 and was named to the TSSAA all-state tournament team in 2011. He went on to earn Freshman of the Year honors in the A-Sun while at Lipscomb, before playing at Northwest Florida State and then two years at Kansas State. He played professionally overseas.

Victoria Simmons

Simmons, a 2017 graduate, was a star on both the cross country and track and field teams. She earned three all-state awards (2014-16) for cross country, while earning all-state twice in the 3,200-meter run in track. She went on to excel in both sports at Ole Miss, where she was second-team All-SEC in cross country (2019, 2021).

Donovan Whitmore

Whitmore, a 2017 graduate, played basketball and was a star on the track and field team. He captured the 200-meter state title as a senior and finished second in the 100 after a tie in the final. He went on to earn two All-American awards at Hutchinson (Kansas) Community College, helping the 4x400 and 4x100 teams break school records.

2016 baseball team

The 2016 Siegel baseball team, which captured the Class AAA state championship, finished 34-9 and worked its way through the losers bracket in order to win state.

2017 boys cross country team

The 2017 Siegel boys cross country team captured the Class AAA TSSAA state championship that season and had two top-10 finishers (Dawson Reed, Tucker Moss). Siegel ran a 1:23:27.64 for a team average of 16:41.53.
