Change is coming to trash pick-up parameters in Jackson

A change to current residential bulk and yard waste guidelines will be effective for all Jacksonians beginning Jan. 1, 2023.

At the start of the new year, all bulk waste pick-ups must be scheduled by calling (731) 425-8545 or by emailing the Health and Sanitation Department at H&S@JacksonTN.gov. Included in the monthly fee paid by the one and two-family residential units, are 12 pick-ups in a calendar year.

Examples of residential bulk waste include appliances with removed compressors, furniture and items heavier than 50 pounds or with a volume exceeding 90-96 gallons.

Tree trimmings, weeds and roots that are free of dirt, branches, and dead trees are all examples of yard waste eligible for pickup. Yard waste can not contain tree trunks or limbs more than 12 inches in diameter or longer than eight feet in length.

Such bulk waste, yard or otherwise, can not exceed size of five feet high by eight feet long by five feet wide.

Household waste like bottles, food, clothing, cans, wastepaper, and general refuse are not eligible for pick-up through the scheduling service.

Vacant properties that have not paid the monthly pick-up fee do not qualify for pick-up. Waste pick-up must also originate at the residence of which the pick-up was requested.

A maximum of 48 hours prior to scheduled pick-up can the bulk waste can be left out, and no more than seven days prior to pick up for yard waste.

Waste Management requires that all waste placed inside the poly cart can not exceed 175 pounds and must be placed on the curb no later than 7 a.m. with the lid closed.

For those that qualify for disability/hardship services, carts must be placed in a visible area on the property and not under any awning formation (carports, decks, patios, garages, porches).

Hand piles must be free of bulk waste, ineligible waste or construction debris. No more than 10 bags placed curbside three feet from the cart just also not be larger than 3’ x 5’ x 3’.
