Changes are coming for the Press-Gazette comics page. Here's what to know

GREEN BAY – Three comic strips will debut in the daily and Sunday editions of the Green Bay Press-Gazette on Oct. 2.

Since the late 19th century, comics have been part of daily newspapers. They often reflect current events and changes in societies, while others are timeless.

This means we need to adjust our comic offerings periodically. The USA TODAY Network has surveyed our readers and based on that we are making some changes.

The changes will not affect your subscription to the Press-Gazette. The comics you see in print will still be on the eNewspaper site, and our subscribers can check out even more comics at greenbaypressgazette.com/comics.

If you're one of those readers who skips the news and sports sections and goes right for the comics, you're probably curious about the changes.

Here’s what to know about the changes to our comic strips.

New comic strip offerings

We will now offer the following comics seven days a week: Pearls Before Swine, Jump Start, Non Sequitur.

We have added the following comics to our Sunday lineup: Crankshaft, Luann, Baldo, Frank & Ernest, Born Loser, Close to Home, Argyle Sweater.

Rose is Rose will be reduced from seven days a week to Sunday only.

Crabgrass, Peanuts, Blondie, other favorites stay

The following cartoons are currently in every day of the week and will continue to be: Crabgrass, Baby Blues, Beetle Bailey, Hagar the Horrible, Peanuts, Pickles, Blondie, Family Circus, Zits, Garfield, For Better or For Worse.

Ziggy will go from Sunday only to seven days a week. The same with Dennis the Menace and Marmaduke.

Wizard of Id, Foxtrot, B.C., and Mother Goose & Grimm remain as Sunday-only comics.

So long Mutts, Get Fuzzy, Doonesbury

We have cut some comic strips as part of this reorganization.

The following comics will be cut from our daily and Sunday offerings: Overboard, Mutts, Between Friends, Real Life Adventures, Get Fuzzy, Hi & Lois.

And we will no longer run the following Sunday-only comics: Doonesbury, The Lockhorns, Bizarro, Sally Forth, Dustin, Prince Valiant.

However, you can still find many of these at greenbaypressgazette.com/comics.

Moving forward

Overall, we’ll have 29 comic strips on Sunday compared with 28 in the past. In the daily edition we'll go from 18 to 17 comic strips.

Also in today's edition, we have a story on the evolution of newspaper comics strips, how they've grown and their impact on society.

We'll also profile some of the artists who create the strips we're running. In the Oct. 1 newspaper, we'll profile Jeff Keane, author of The Family Circus, and on Oct. 8, readers we'll have a story about Jim Borgman of Zits, Brian Crane of Pickles, and Dean Young of Blondie.

A story about Josh Fruhlinger, the Comics Curmudgeon, is also planned for Oct 1. He's the blogger behind joshreads.com, who makes fun of the funnies.
