Channel Islands National Park lifts storm-related closure

Channel Islands National Park has reopened Santa Barbara Island to the public following a months-long closure.

Winter storms damaged the dock and a nearby building on the island, one of five in the national park off Ventura. Repairs to the lower landing are ongoing but boaters can access the island via skiff, park service officials said this week.

Meanwhile, much of San Miguel Island likely will remain closed through the summer, according to the agency.

The public may access the beach at Cuyler Harbor, but repairs to the island's Nidever Canyon Trail continue. A rockslide during January storms dumped large boulders onto the trail and cut off access.

Officials at Channel Island National Park reported January 2023 storms triggered a rockslide on San Miguel Island.
