The last time Ohio State and Northwestern played each other, the Buckeyes emerged looking every bit like an upper-level Big Ten team. In a New Year's Day game at Welsh-Ryan Arena, Ohio State jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a comfortable, dominant 73-57 victory.
That moved the Buckeyes to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in Big Ten play. What has transpired since has been a litany of woe for Ohio State, which needs a win Thursday night to avoid its second five-game losing streak of the season. The Buckeyes lost five straight immediately after the win against the Wildcats, beat Iowa on Jan. 21 and now have lost four straight to go 1-9 in their last 10 games.
"You focus on the work as much as possible," coach Chris Holtmann said. "And then, for me, when I’m really committed to my habits every day that allow me to be in somewhat of a sane mental space and the habits that help me be better physically, spiritually and emotionally. Those are typically the things that allow you to hopefully be the best version of yourself. When I don’t do that, I can tend to be, get angry a little easier, maybe be a little bit more triggered.
"For me, that’s really what I’ve focused on, the work, and focused on trying to do those things well."
The game is the first of two consecutive home games for the Buckeyes, who last played two straight games at Value City Arena in late December. Michigan State will come to town Sunday afternoon.
