Ohio State will try to repeat the only joy it has found since New Year's Day when it goes to Iowa on Thursday night. The Buckeyes will tip off against the Hawkeyes having lost six in a row and 11 of their last 12 games, with the outlier a 93-77 win against Iowa in Value City Arena on Jan. 21.
Otherwise, it's been a string of losses, most recently a 62-41 defeat at the hands of Michigan State on Sunday. It was the fewest points scored by an Ohio State team since it scored that number against the Spartans on Feb. 7, 1996. The 21-point loss was also the most lopsided of the season for the Buckeyes, and with six regular-season games remaining they are running out of time to stop this slide.
"It’s a dark time when you are struggling," coach Chris Holtmann said Monday. "I think you have to be able to approach each day with the optimism that we’re going to grow and get better. I was in the office very early on Sunday morning prepping for our group with excitement about what was coming and I think that’s the approach that’s required. It certainly can be challenging.
"You feel these things (as a coach) in a way that it’s hard to understand. You eat differently. You sleep differently. You just live differently when you lose a game, so it’s certainly the case. We have to be mindful of that with our players."
