Chapin defeats O.D. Wyatt, 69-68, in double overtime to advance to Region 1-5A title game

WICHITA FALLS — Chapin is headed to the program's first regional championship game in boys basketball. In a thrilling back and forth matchup at the Kay Yeager Coliseum, the Huskies held off Fort Worth's O.D. Wyatt High School, 69-68, in double overtime in a battle of state-ranked teams.

O.D. Wyatt's D'Adrian Thomas missed a layup at the final buzzer to give the Huskies the win. Chapin (30-6) advances to meet Mansfield Summit on Saturday at noon CST for the Region 1-5A title. Mansfield Summit defeated Amarillo High in the first semifinal, 55-48. The Chaparrals finish the season 20-11.

Chapin is ranked No. 18 in the state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and O.D. Wyatt is ranked No. 9. On Saturday, the Huskies will face the No. 11-ranked Jaguars.

"These kids deserve it," said Chapin coach Rodney Lewis of his kids. "We battled hard, we fought hard. This is why we played the tough schedule we did. Those tough games prepared us for this."

Brandon Hymes' basket in the paint with 11.1 seconds remaining turned out to be the game winner. He scored six of his 13 points in the second overtime period. Hymes had to step up as leading scorer Bryson Goldsmith was bothered by cramps in his right ankle and forward Idalius Coleman fouled out.

"Our goal is to win a state title," Hymes said. "We battled all night. We never stopped believing. I just had to step up and make plays."

How it happened for Chapin High School basketball

Chapin led 49-41 after three quarters by outscoring the Chaparrals 21-10 in the third quarter. Goldsmith scored nine and Coleman added six to lead the way for Chapin in the third.

But the Chaparrals roared back in the fourth quarter and went up 55-51. The Huskies settled down and eventually forced the first overtime tied at 60. Both teams scored two points in the first overtime to make it 62-62 entering the second overtime.

Goldsmith led Chapin with 26 points, Coleman scored 15 and Jayden Leverett scored nine.

"It was a dogfight," Hymes said. "A real battle. We stayed composed."

Added Goldsmith: "I love this team. We've been tested this season and that paid off. We'll lock in for the championship and prepare for it."

Myles Rigsby led the Chaparrals with 28 points and Nicholas Gunter added 13 points.

Chapin High School basketball leads at half

In the first half, Chapin led 24-13 after going on a 10-0 run sparked by a 3-pointer from Peyton Parker and an old-fashioned three-point play by Hymes. Goldsmith scored nine points for the Huskies in the first half, while Idalius Coleman and Hymes each scored seven.

But the Chaparrals stormed back with a strong pressure defense and went on an 18-4 run to take a 31-28 halftime lead. Gunter keyed the late run with 10 of his 13 first half points.
