Chapin's historic season in boys basketball comes to end against Mansfield Summit

WICHITA FALLS — Chapin's historic season ended Saturday in the Region I-5A boys basketball title game with a 54-47 loss to Mansfield Summit at Kay Yeager Coliseum.

The Huskies were playing in the school's first regional championship game and ends its season with a 30-7 record. The 31-5 Jaguars advance to the state tournament next week in San Antonio. The Huskies have made three straight trips to the regional tournament.

Mansfield Summit reached the finals by defeating Amarillo High, 55-48, on Friday. Chapin reached the finals by defeating Fort Worth's O.D. Wyatt, 69-68, in double overtime also on Friday.

Jaguars with big fourth quarter

The Jaguars, ranked No. 18 by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, outscored the Huskies 12-7 in the fourth quarter and led by as much as 10 points, 52-42. After Chapin tied the game at 42, Mansfield Summit went on a 10-0 run.

Franck Emmou scored four points and had an assist to lead the way for the Jaguars.

Tight third quarter

The Huskies and Jaguars went back and forth in the third quarter, which was won by the Jaguars, 14-12. UTEP signee David Terrell led the Jaguars with seven points in the third quarter. Chapin was anchored by Brandon Hymes with seven points. Terrell finished with 11 points.

Close first half

Mansfield Summit was in control of the opening half and led 28-15 before the Huskies went on a 13-0 run to tie the game at 28.

Eli Rodriguez sparked the Huskies run with two 3-pointers and Bryson Goldsmith scored six points. Goldsmith finished the first half with 14 points.

The Jaguars got eight points each from Richard Lemboye and Emmou. Terrell had four points and three assists for the Jaguars.

All-Tournament

Hymes and Goldsmith earned All-Region honors for the Huskies. Hymes scored 19 on Saturday and Goldsmith scored 17. Goldsmith scored 43 points in the two games in Wichita Falls.

What the players said

"We made history and we proved that teams from El Paso can compete at a high level," Hymes said. "I'll always remember the brotherhood we had."

Added Goldsmith: "We showed lots of fight. We battled hard throughout. Eli helped spark us in the first half, he proved he can make big plays. This team is special, we came together to accomplish so much."

What the coaches said

"We'll be back," Chapin coach Rodney Lewis said. "Our kids fought, we battled. The double overtime game was tough on us on Friday, but this team left everything on the floor. I couldn't me more happy. We faced so many good teams this season and that made us better."

Added Mansfield Summit coach Emund Prichett: "Chapin is a tough team, we knew they would compete. We played them two years ago and that was a tough, hard fought game. Rodney Lewis does a great job of coaching them."
