Chaps win, Lady Chaps falter late at UT Tyler

TYLER — Monterey graduate Russell Harrison scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds Thursday night, leading Lubbock Christian University to a 58-48 road victory against UT Tyler in Lone Star Conference men's basketball.

Aaron Gonzales added 13 points for LCU (11-6, 7-4), and season scoring leader Rowan Mackenzie had nine points and 10 rebounds. The Chaps got eight points and five assists from Najeeb Muhammad.

LCU, which has alternated a win with a loss for its past seven games, will try to put together a win streak when the Chaps visit Dallas Baptist (10-9, 5-6) at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Patriots have lost four in a row.

Slovakian big man Milan Szabo scored 11 for UT Tyler (8-7, 4-7), and Jordan Hairston was next with 10.

LCU women 57

TYLER — Martina Machalova scored 21 points, six in a game-ending 20-0 run, as UT Tyler rallied past Lubbock Christian University in Lone Star Conference action.

UT Tyler (15-3, 10-1) beat LCU (13-6, 8-3) for the first time in the five-game series history. The Patriots stayed one game behind seventh-ranked Texas Woman's (16-1, 11-0) in the LSC East Division.

The Lady Chaps led 57-49 on a basket by Maci Maddox with 6:26 left, then went scoreless the rest of the way. Machalova put the Patriots ahead for good on a four-point play with 2:41 to go. She made a 3-point goal, drew a foul by Audrey Robertson and added the free throw to make the score 58-57.

Lovisa Hevinder scored the game's last six points, all on free throws in the final minute.

Maddox had 14 points and five assists for LCU. The Lady Chaps' road trip continues with a game at 2 p.m. Saturday in Denton against Texas Woman's, which has won 14 in a row.

Shaylee Stovall and Rachel Haase added 13 and 11 points, respectively, for LCU, and Grace Foster had five points and 10 rebounds. The Lady Chaps led by 16 points three times in the third quarter.

New Mexico JC 57

HOBBS, N.M. — South Plains College went on the road and upset No. 11 New Mexico Junior College behind 16 points from Matilda Soderlund and 15 points and eight rebounds from Jennifer Silva.

South Plains (9-7, 3-0 in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference) handed New Mexico JC (14-3, 3-1) its first loss in seven games, overcoming a 10-point deficit in the third quarter. Celia Sumbane added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Texans.

Delma Zita led NMJC with 15 points.

HOBBS, N.M. — Jaden Harris made a go-ahead, 12-foot jumper with two seconds left, lifting South Plains College to a road victory at New Mexico Junior College in a WJCAC thriller.

Harris' basket came off an inbound pass and moved South Plains in front 74-73.

New Mexico JC committed a turnover on the subsequent inbound play and quickly fouled. Christian Coleman made one of two free throws for the final margin.

Coleman finished with 30 points and 10 rebounds for South Plains (15-3, 3-1). Harris had 18 points and seven rebounds.

Logan McLaughlin scored 18 points for New Mexico JC (9-9, 2-2), leading four double-digit scorers.

Wayland women 72

PLAINVIEW — Kaitlyn Edgemon, Jenna-Cooper Jackson and Taylor Houston supplied 19, 17 and 15 points, respectively, and Wayland Baptist at home against Southwestern Assemblies of God in a Sooner Athletic Conference game.

Cooper-Jackson had nine rebounds and seven assists, and Edgemon and Houston both had seven rebounds and four assists.

Taryn Schultz added 11 points for the Flying Queens (11-7, 7-5), who host the University of North Texas-Dallas at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Chanie Chambers from Abernathy led SAGU (5-14, 2-11) with 15 points, and Taylor Moravcik from Shallowater had 10 points and 19 rebounds.

Wayland men 81

PLAINVIEW — D'Michael Bellfield's 20 points and eight rebounds helped Wayland Baptist down Southwestern Assemblies of God for its second Sooner Athletic Conference victory in a row.

Tedrick Wolfe added 16 points and seven rebounds for Wayland (12-6, 7-5). The Pioneers got 14 points from R.J. Mason and 13 from Dylan McDougal.

Wayland hosts the University of North Texas-Dallas at 4 p.m. Saturday at Hutcherson Center.

Philbert Weekes had 12 points and 15 rebounds for SAGU (11-8, 6-7).
