HILLSDALE — The Hillsdale College men's and women's basketball teams had crucial G-MAC contests against Malone this past weekend. The Charger women's basketball team fell to Malone 60-72, and the #11 men's Chargers took down Malone 76-70.

The Charger women's hoops team led Malone 58-57 with 4:25 left to play. Malone would outscore the Chargers the rest of the way 15-2. The Pioneers' defense corralled the Chargers in the final minutes and forced tough looks on shot attempts. The Chargers were 1-for-9 from the floor in the closing minutes and 0-for-6 from deep. The Chargers – despite their offensive struggles – trailed by just four points with 1:36 left to play, but Malone stretched the lead back to six and hit six of their free throw attempts in the final minute.

Charger senior Sydney Mills recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Grace Touchette shot 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Arianna Sysem added 10 points, three rebounds and two blocks.

The women's basketball team is now 10-7 overall – 3-4 in the G-MAC – and faces another big week ahead as they conclude a six-game homestand. Next up for Hillsdale is Ursuline. Ursuline is currently 5-2 in league play.

The #11 Charger men's basketball team was up just 64-63 with three minutes left in the game against Malone. Senior Charger Peter Kalthoff had two contested layups and senior Jack Gohlke had a three-pointer to help Hillsdale College soar to a 71-65 advantage with a minute left.

Kalthoff recorded three defensive turnovers to stall the Pioneer momentum. Kalthoff led the Chargers with 14 total points and three blocks. Hillsdale also got 14 points from sophomore Joe Reuter and 12 points and three assists from Kyle Goessler to keep the scoring balance.

After getting into foul trouble, freshman Ahston Janowski came off the bench and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field for a career high 10 points. He also had four rebounds to help keep the Chargers from falling behind. Gohlke had eight points and six rebounds for the Chargers.

Hillsdale is now 14-1 on the season and 7-1 in G-MAC play. They are a half-game ahead of Ashland for the conference lead. Hillsdale has two more games at home this week, starting with a 7:30 p.m. contest with Northwood on Thursday.
