Chargers RB Gordon ends holdout, still 'No. 1 guy'

Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon ended his 64-day contract holdout and reported to the team facility on Thursday.

Gordon will resume his role as the team's starting back once he is ready to play, Chargers coach Anthony Lynn told reporters. Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson have been splitting the duties.

"He was our starter for a reason," Lynn said. "I like the way Austin and JJ have been working. They've done an excellent job and proved they can play in this league. They will still have a major role in this offense, but as soon as Melvin's ready, he'll go back to being our No. 1 guy."

Gordon is not expected to play Sunday when the Chargers (1-2) travel to face the Miami Dolphins (0-3). Lynn said the team received a two-week roster exemption to allow Gordon to get into playing shape.

Lynn said Gordon passed his physical on Thursday and was with his teammates on the practice field.

Ekeler's role will be lessened due to Gordon's presence, but he was happy to see his teammate back with the club.

"We've got a little swag back in the room," Ekeler said. "It's good to see Melvin back in the office. We've got one of our playmakers back on our team. I'm glad they got everything figured out and he's back with us."

Gordon, 26, is expected to be playing his final season with the Chargers, ESPN's Josina Anderson reported.

The 2015 first-round pick and two-time Pro Bowl selection desires a contract extension that will place him in the top tier among NFL running backs.

Now on the fifth-year team option of his rookie contract, Gordon was set to make $5.6 million in 2019. A two-time Pro Bowl selection, he reportedly rejected a deal that would pay him roughly $10 million this season.

Gordon has gained 5,205 yards from scrimmage and scored 38 touchdowns during his first four seasons.

Ekeler has 368 yards from scrimmage (160 rushing, 208 receiving) and Jackson has a stellar 7.9 average and 142 rushing yards while filling in for Gordon.
