Charges filed in fatal Saturday shooting on West Madison Street in Springfield

A 20-year-old Springfield man has been charged following a fatal shooting Saturday in the 200 block of West Madison Street, about a block southwest of Jenny Lincoln Park.

The shooting was reported at 10:45 p.m. Saturday, according to a release from the Springfield Police Department. Responding officers found Keontae Tureaud, 19, of Springfield, with gunshot wounds. Tureaud, who was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, died Monday.

Nikolai Janes, 20, of Springfield, was at the scene Saturday and identified as a suspect in the shooting, police said. He was arrested Sunday, booked into the Greene County Jail and — prior to Tureaud's death — charged with second-degree assault and armed criminal action. Janes was being held with a bond of $100,000.
