Virtual author event

Andrew Lawler discusses his new book, "Under Jerusalem," during a virtual author event hosted by The BookMark on Feb. 21.

Bestselling author Andrew Lawler presents his latest book, “Under Jerusalem: The Buried History of the World’s Most Contested City” via The BookMark’s virtual author event on Monday, Feb. 21 at 6 p.m.

A spellbinding history of the hidden world below the Holy City, “Under Jerusalem” is a saga of biblical treasures, intrepid explorers and political upheaval.

In 1863, a French senator arrived in Jerusalem hoping to unearth relics dating to biblical times. Digging deep underground, he discovered an ancient grave that, he claimed, belonged to an Old Testament queen. News of his find ricocheted around the world, inspiring others to explore Jerusalem’s storied past.

Since then, Jerusalem has drawn a global cast of fortune seekers, missionaries, archaeologists and zealots, all eager to extract the past from beneath the city’s streets and shrines. Their efforts have affected not only our understanding of Jerusalem’s history, but its hotly disputed present. The quest to retrieve ancient Jewish heritage has sparked bloody riots and thwarted international peace agreements. It has also served as a way to stake a claim to the most contested city on the planet. Today, the earth below Jerusalem remains a battleground in the struggle to control the city above.

The book takes readers into the tombs, tunnels and trenches of the Holy City, bringing to life the indelible characters who have investigated this subterranean landscape. With clarity and verve, Lawler reveals how their pursuit has not only defined the conflict over modern Jerusalem, but could provide a map for two peoples and three faiths to peacefully coexist.

Tree giveaway

Want more shade in your yard? Atlantic Beach’s newly updated Chapter 23 of the Code of Ordinances expands the use of tree-conservation funds to plant trees in front yards on private property. These "Adopt-a-Tree" funds come from property owners who pay into the tree-conservation fund, which is earmarked to expand the public tree canopy.

In an effort to evenly distribute the tree-conservation funds, two trees per calendar year, per property may be planted. The plantings will occur in the spring and fall. Once planted, the property owner is responsible for maintaining the trees.

Go to https://bit.ly/3pfGKQM to complete an application for a free tree. City staff will review your requested tree location to determine if there are any site restrictions, which could include overhead or underground utilities, drainage areas and swales, easements, existing tree canopy, etc.
