Charles Byrn files for Place 6 on Abilene City Council

Charles Byrn has filed to run against Travis Craver, creating a three-way race for the Place 6 on the Abilene City Council.

Dorothy Clay filed Friday, while Byrn filed Tuesday afternoon.

It's the second time for Byrn to face Craver. In 2019, he lost to him in a five-way contest.

Byrn, who also ran for the Abilene Independent School District's board of trustees in 2012, said during his previous attempt he was running to cut taxes, trim spending and to get "government out of the way."

Place 5 incumbent Kyle McAlister also has filed for another term.

How to file

Those who wish to file for either place may do so through the city secretary's office at Abilene City Hall, 555 Walnut St.

Online materials are available at abilenetx.gov/309/Elections.

Council members are elected at-large, but residency requirements are imposed.

Place 5 candidates must live north of the Texas & Pacific Railroad Company main line, while Place 6 must live south.

Among other qualifications, candidates must be 21 years of age, be a resident of Texas and the city, be a qualified voter and must have resided within the city for at least one year preceding election day.

The last day to file is Feb. 18. The election is May 7.
