Charles Village Festival ending after 25 years in Baltimore

The Charles Village Festival in North Baltimore’s Wyman Park Dell is ending after 25 years, according to a Facebook post from the festival’s account Monday.

Organizers of the two-day springtime festival said they decided to end the event due to increasing costs, the changing landscape of area events and decreased revenues to benefit four community organizations: the Charles Village Civic Association, the Charles Village Rec League, Village Learning Place and Friends of Wyman Park Dell.

“The festival committee thanks the many volunteers, community members, vendors, musicians and sponsors who helped shape and support this vibrant neighborhood event all these years,” the Charles Village Festival Committee wrote on its website. “We encourage the community to envision new ways to celebrate Charles Village!”

Another long-standing Baltimore festival, HONFest, announced last month that it will cease after 30 years following the retirement of its coordinator. Likewise, Hampdenfest and Remfest in Remington were canceled last year because of the rescheduling of Artscape. At the time, Remfest organizers said it would be delayed until this spring. The event’s website lists May 11 as the new date for the festival.

Although Baltimore has lost many of its festivals, the Baltimore Hon Hive, a social group initially composed of HONFest winners, wrote in a social media post that work is being done to launch a new festival, and Charles Village is still holding its 42nd annual Charles Village Garden Walk on June 2 in the area north of 29th Street.
