Charleston Officials Search for Suspect Who Drove Into Crossing Guard

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help identifying a car that drove into a school crossing guard on January 24 outside the Charleston Charter School for Math and Science.

Surveillance footage shows a four-door sedan with paper tags driving into the crossing guard at the intersection of King Street and Francis Street. She then stands in the car’s way, but it continues to move forward, before passing her and speeding away. The officer suffered minor injuries, police said.

The sheriff’s office said this was the second incident in two weeks where a crossing guard was struck by a vehicle. The other incident was on January 16 in West Ashley.

The sheriff’s office encouraged drivers to “use extra caution in school zones, follow crossing officers’ directions and yield the right of way until students and crossing officers have exited the crosswalk.” Credit: Charleston County Sheriff’s Office via Storyful
