CHARLEVOIX — The Charlevoix Public Library will host a Michigan Notable Book 2022 speaker at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7 in the Community Room.

Advocate, attorney, and author Christine A. Yared will discuss her book "Private Life, Public School: Gay Teacher Under Fire."

Gerry Crane was a gifted and beloved high school music teacher in West Michigan who, after marrying his partner in 1995, faced vitriol and repercussions until he finally resigned from the school. Although in 2020 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that civil rights law protects LGBTQ workers from employment discrimination, the ruling came too late for Crane, who died from a heart attack in 1996. "Private Love, Public School" recounts the true story of what happened when members of a Midwestern community demanded that their religious beliefs be imposed on a public school — and the school followed suit.
