Charlevoix Public Library announces trick-or-treat, other October events

CHARLEVOIX — The Charlevoix Public Library has a full slate of events scheduled for October, including guest authors, films and trick-or-treating.

Oct. 4: Screening of the documentary "WARRIOR LAWYERS: Defenders of Sacred Justice"

At 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4, the library will be screening the documentary "WARRIOR LAWYERS: Defenders of Sacred Justice" in the community room. The one-hour documentary invites viewers into the lives of contemporary Native American role models. It focuses on the under reported themes of nation re-building, tribal justice and cultural revitalization. There will be a question and answer period after the film, hosted by film documentarian Audrey Geyer.

Oct. 11: Travels from Isle Royale with Vic Foerster 

At 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11, award-winning author and arborist Vic Foerster will recount his travels to Isle Royale in the community room.

Protected by the National Park Service for over 90 years, Isle Royale doubles as a wilderness escape for outdoor enthusiasts and as one of the foremost outdoor laboratories in the world. As such, in 1984, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization designated Isle Royale a World Biosphere Reserve.

Oct. 12: "Mushroom House Man" with Alice McGinty and Sharon Smithem 

From 5:30-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12, author Alice McGinty will talk about her new book, "Mushroom House Man: The Story of Earl A. Young and his Cottages of Stone" in the community room. After the read aloud, a light meal will be provided and kids can learn how to draw their own mushroom house with illustrator Sharon Smithem.

This children's program is family-friendly and recommended for ages 5-12. Registration is required to attend.

Oct. 17: W. Bruce Cameron author visit

International best-selling author W. Bruce Cameronwill be visiting the library at 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 17 in the community room.

Cameron is the author of the #1 New York Times, USA Today and international bestselling novel "A Dog’s Purpose." It has been translated into over 50 languages and continues to top bestseller lists worldwide. He is also the author of "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter," which became an award-winning TV series.

Oct. 25: Author discussion with Laurie Cass

At 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25, local author Laurie Cass will discuss her newest novel "The Crime that Binds" in the community room.

National bestselling author Cass will share stories of her writing journey and how she juggles a day job and multiple writing contracts. Cass writes the Bookmobile Cat Cozy Mystery series, and her newest novel "The Crime that Binds" is set in northwest lower Michigan and features a library that bears a strong resemblance to the Charlevoix Public Library.

Oct. 31: Halloween trick-or-treating

From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31, kids of all ages are invited to trick-or-treat at the Charlevoix Public Library. Stop by the library in costume and trick-or-treat at any of the service desks.

Michigan Notable Book Series at the Charlevoix Public Library  

During October and November, the Charlevoix Public Library will be hosting a series of events to discuss the Michigan Notable Book "Firekeeper’s Daughter" by Angeline Boulley. The book, set in Sault Ste. Marie, is a Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick, a 2022 Michigan Notable Book, and is listed by Time magazine as one of the 100 best YA books of all time.

At 6 p.m. on Oct. 5, the Bier's & Books Club will discuss the book at Bier’s Inwood Brewery. This event is only for ages 21 and up and there is limited attendance. Registration is required.

At 6 p.m. on Oct. 24, the BookTalkers Discussion Group will also discuss the book in the Armstrong Conference Room. Registration is required.

At 6 p.m. on Nov. 1, the Charlevoix Public Library will host author Angeline Boulley for a discussion of "Firekeeper’s Daughter" in the community room.
