Crafternoons for Grown-ups

2-4 p.m. on Thursday, May 12 and Thursday, May 19 in the library lobby.

Join others for summer crafting fun. Make a woolly felt ball by both wet felting and needle felting. These are great for pets to play with and they last forever. Drop in for this activity and take away a great toy you created yourself. Registration is not required, though supplies are limited.

BookTalkers: "Crying in H Mart" by Michelle Zauner

6 p.m. on Monday, May 16 in the Armstrong Conference Room, registration requested.

"Ever since my mom died, I cry in H Mart," so begins this award-winning memoir by musician Michelle Zauner. Losing a parent is one thing, but to lose direct ties to one's family heritage as well is its own tragedy. Though the cultural references in her book are particular to Zauner's life, her account contains so many experiences of grief and endurance that it will resonate with just about everyone.

Inland Lake Management in the Charlevoix Region with DNR Fisheries Biologist Heather Hettinger

6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17 in the Community Room.

Join DNR Fisheries Biologist Heather Hettinger as she discusses various inland lake management projects. Heather will cover topics including fisheries surveys in rivers and lakes, fish stocking efforts in the area, and cooperative fish management practices such as reviewing EGLE (Environment, Great Lakes, & Energy) permits, and collaborating with local fishing groups in the region.

SummerFolk Concert Series: Troy Graham

6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 23 in the Children’s Garden (Community Room if rain), bring a chair.

Otherwise known as "Great Lakes Graham," Troy is a native to Marquette. He has spent his career playing music from many genres (old-time, bluegrass, folk, indie), has independently recorded over a dozen albums, and has published four poetry books. He is also well known for his decade-long tour with bluegrass band, Sparrow Tree (2007-2017).

The Survey Vessel Steelhead: Charlevoix’s Connection to Great Lakes Fisheries Research with DNR Research Manager Dave Clapp

6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24 in the Community Room.

Listen as DNR Fishieries Research Manager Dave Clapp discusses the history of operations on the DNR Survey Vessel Steelhead. Of the four Michigan DNR survey vessels, only the S/V Steelhead has called Charlevoix its home port for 54 years. The data collected from the S/V Steelhead is used to manage Great Lakes fish populations and provides other pertinent information. This presentation will be of interest to all who love our lakes and their resources.

Introduction to Pickleball with Pickleball Ambassador Dave Gallinat

6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31 at Charlevoix’s Elm Street courts

Come learn all about Pickleball, considered to be the fastest growing sport in North America. All will meet at the Elm Street courts to learn the basics of Pickleball from Dave and his colleagues. Learn about the history of the game, equipment and court, basic rules, places to play, and a demonstration of the game will be played. Wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, and be prepared to have fun and learn. Pickleball equipment will be provided. This event is held at the Elm Street Courts (unless rain then Community Rooms A & B).

BLAST for Tweens & Teens

10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 14 (waitlist date: May 21) in Community Room A. For ages 12-18 years. Registration required. Maximum eight seats.

BLAST: Babysitter Lessons and Safety Training program provides training in pediatric first aid and CPR, household safety, and the fundamentals of childcare. This course helps prepare tweens and teens to interview for a babysitting job, select suitable activities for sitting, and learn to be competent caregivers. Topics covered include: feeding, burping a baby, dealing with crying, preparing children for bed, dealing with behavioral issues and discipline. This is a fun class with baby manikins to diaper and feed. Instruction manuals are included and participants will earn Heartsaver CPR, AED and First Aid certification. As a library patron, the fee for this course is paid for you by Charlevoix Public Library. Please bring a lunch to eat at the lunch break, refrigeration is available. If this course fills with a waitlist, the second course will take place on May 21, 2021. Instructor is Sue Coen.

Ready to Ride with Revolution Bike

5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 19 in the Youth Activity Center. For ages 5-12 years.

Learn how to get your bicycle ready to hit the road for the summer from Chet and Tyler of Revolution Bike Shop in Charlevoix. This hands-on demonstration with a kid's bike will teach you, wheel to wheel, how to keep your bike in shape all summer long. Feel free to ride your bike to the library to attend the program, but please do not bring your bike into the program. Bike racks are available for you to park your wheels outside of the library.
