Charlevoix Marathon sees nearly 1,500 runners in 16th annual season

CHARLEVOIX — If you’re going to run a marathon, shouldn’t it come with a great view?

That’s always been the thought of those running the annual Charlevoix Marathon and Half Marathon, which took place Saturday for the 16th straight year.

Nearly 1,500 competitors came out Saturday to Charlevoix to race in the full marathon, half marathon, 10k and 5k races, with the events starting on Bridge Street in downtown Charlevoix, heading out along Lake Michigan and finishing near Round Lake in Charlevoix.

Once again a Boston Marathon qualifying race, a number of runners met the mark on both the male and female side.

The top placing runner overall came as former Bowling Green and University of Miami runner Nathan Kuck, as he finished the full marathon in 2 hours, 37 minutes and 10 seconds.

Kuck, a native of Cincinnati, held a 5:59 pace and hit the half marathon point with a lead in 1:19:14.

Following Kuck in the full marathon was Colin Hunter in 2:44:32 and Chris Galloway in third place in 2:49:10.

The top placing female runner in the full marathon was then Emily Avers in fourth place overall, as she ran 2:54:05 with a pace of 6:38.

Kaitlyn Arnold was then second on the women’s side with a time of 2:54:57, good for sixth overall, while Serena Kessler was third among women’s runners and 11th overall in 2:59:23.

Other top 10 finishers within the full marathon included: Bryan Lundquist, 5th (2:54:36); Dalton Willmann, 7th (2:58:51); Anthony Steeno, 8th (2:58:54); David Deline, 9th (2:59:05); and Matt Borland, 10th (2:59.10).

In the half marathon, Mike Meehan was the top placing competitor in 1:13:16, followed by Dalton Rice, 1:17:18; and Davis Mathieu, 1:19:44.

The top placing women’s runner in the half marathon came as East Jordan native and former University of Michigan runner Kayla Keene.

Keene placed seventh overall and first among women in 1:27:29, with a pace of 6:40.

Brendan Herger then won the 10k event in 32:54, while Joseph Perreault placed first in the 5k race in 17:23.
