Charlie Adelson, the former brother-in-law of Dan Markel, has been transported from South Florida to Tallahassee to face charges in the murder of the Florida State University law professor.

Adelson, a 45-year-old dentist from Fort Lauderdale, was booked into the Leon County Detention Facility on Monday on charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and solicitation to commit first-degree murder.

Adelson appeared Tuesday, wearing a white and orange jumpsuit, via video conference before Leon County Judge Augustus D. Aikens Jr. who ordered he be held without bond and not contact any codefendants.

His attorney Margot Moss said she would be filing a motion to hold an evidentiary hearing in the hopes Adelson would receive a bond.

“We will be moving for bond shortly. Charlie deserves a bond. He’s known about this investigation for a long, long time and has never fled," Adelson's attorneys Moss and Davis Oscar Markus said in a statement to the Tallahassee Democrat. "He’s no danger to anyone. And the so-called new evidence actually exonerates Charlie."

"Putting aside all of the noise, he should get a bond.”

Charging documents, which would lay out the evidence which led to his arrest, have not yet been made public.

Prosecutors say Adelson paid two hit men to travel from South Florida to Tallahassee in 2014 to kill Markel, who was shot at point-blank range in the garage of his Betton Hills home. Court records say the murder-for-hire plot unfolded amid a child custody fight between Adelson's sister, Wendi Adelson, and her ex-husband, Markel.

Chronicling the case:

A Leon County grand jury on Wednesday indicted Adelson and Katherine Magbanua, his former girlfriend and office worker. Magbanua, whose 2019 trial in the murder case ended with a hung jury, was indicted on the same three murder charges Adelson faces.

The two contract killers who carried out the hit, Sigfredo Garcia and Luis Rivera, have already been convicted of murdering Markel, who was an accomplished legal scholar and a father of two boys. Garcia shares two children with Magbanua.
