Speculation surrounding Charlie Puth’s political views has risen after a TikTok video proclaiming him to be a Trump supporter went viral.
A TikTok posted by an account named @theangryleftist listed a series of celebrities who “are actually filthy Trump supporters”. Puth’s name is the first to appear, followed by other stars including Jon Voight and Ted Nugent.
The singer’s political allegiance has been under scrutiny since the 2016 election when a number of articles reported that Puth "was a secret Trump supporter".
Screenshots from his private Facebook account that year reportedly showed the 28-year-old sharing a number of posts in support of the current president.
Prior to the resurfacing of his old Facebook posts, in 2015 the musician revealed why he kept quiet on political matters.

He said: “It’s probably better to never, ever talk about political things because people hate you. They’ll beat me up if I say something wrong.”
Since @theangryleftist’s TikTok video went viral, fans have stepped in to defend Puth against the allegation.
One fan suggested that the rumours are circulating solely because Puth was not as vocal as other celebrities in telling his fans to vote in November’s election. They said: “Just because someone doesn’t use their platform for political bs doesn’t mean that indicative of who he voted for.”

Many of Puth’s fans shared screenshots of the singer liking Democratic candidate Joe Biden’s social media posts in the run-up to the election as proof that the video’s claim is false. They also shared photos of the singer celebrating on the day that Biden was declared winner on 7 November.
Another fan wrote: “For real, ppl need to literally check his actual social media. It’s sad and embarrassing when they can’t even do that, and would rather believe rumours instead…??”
Others have been calling on the musician to clarify his stance, stating: “Hey @charlieputh please clear the air and say you don’t support Trump, I need to know this.”
In 2018, the “We Don’t Talk Anymore” singer also performed at a March For Our Lives protest in Washington DC, which called to end gun violence.
Puth has previously come under fire in 2016 for saying that the Kesha v Dr Luke trial, which saw the pop star accuse the producer of “sexually, physically, verbally and emotionally” abusing her, was “devastating for both parties”. Puth went on to praise Luke as a “production idol.”
Following the backlash to his comments, the singer said: "I'm extremely sensitive to the issues females face in the music industry. I apologise to Kesha if I came across as insensitive, but by no means did I mean any harm."
