Charlotte ad agency Wray Ward cuts staff by 11%, citing ‘economic environment’

Wray Ward, Charlotte’s largest advertising agency, laid off roughly 20 employees last month, or 11% of its full-time staff, a company spokesperson confirmed to CBJ.

Earlier in March, CBJ reported Wray Ward’s full-time employee count had reached 175.

Heather Tamol, agency spokesperson, said this week that Wray Ward’s current headcount is in “the mid-150s.” Assuming a reduction of 20 people equates to an 11% reduction in employees.

The agency ranked No. 1 in CBJ’s most recent list of Charlotte’s largest advertising firms, with annual revenue of $20 million. Key clients include skylight-maker Velux, Huber Engineered Woods (material for flooring, walls, and roofs) and Sunbelt Rentals (equipment and tool rental).

Tamol said the layoffs are “a result of the current economic environment,” adding that the agency “hates to lose” anyone from its talented workforce. Wray Ward is helping affected staffers to find new jobs when possible.
