Charlotte Fire Department getting first all-electric station

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A new Charlotte Fire station will represent a significant step in the city’s sustainability goals for the end of the decade.

On Monday, City Council approved a new facility for Fire Station 30, to be built at 3019 Beam Road in southwest Charlotte. This two-story structure will be the department’s first new all-electric firehouse, supporting the city’s Strategic Energy Action Plan goal of zero-carbon city buildings.

More than $1.2 million approved for CMPD’s Civilian Crash Investigation Program

“This further shows commitment to goals to transition to a low-carbon future,” said Council Member Dimple Ajmera. “This is a bold step forward. I appreciate the effort our fire department and staff has done to make this goal a reality, step by step.”

The station will replace the existing firehouse at 4707 Belle-Oaks Drive, a residence-like building that was built in 1955. The city says the new one will help improve response times.

The project is anticipated to be completed by first quarter of 2026.

Despite supporting the project, another council member believes the city needs to work to pursue contracting with minority, women, and small business enterprises (MWSBE). Swinerton Builders was chosen for the project.

“I want to lift up that I absolutely expect to see a continued focus on how do we update our procurement method such that we can support more NWSBE in our community,” said Victoria Watlington. “We look around at some of our peers and see that they have made great strides in NWSBE participation, and I’d like to see us do more, frankly.”
