Charlotte’s food and drink scene sees several closures, additions to start 2023

The Charlotte area lost a few establishments to start the new year, including a long-known staple and newer locations alike.

Irish pub Piper’s at Galway Hooker in Cornelius was among the first to close in 2023. The pub — formerly known as just Galway Hooker — closed on Jan. 1 after 20-plus years in business. During that time, it became a staple of the Lake Norman community.

In a different part of town, LuLu’s Maryland Style Chicken & Seafood closed its Plaza Midwood restaurant on Central Avenue after opening it less than a year ago. The owners are shifting their focus back to the original location on Tuckaseegee Road.

RePour at the Innovation Barn in Charlotte’s Belmont neighborhood is among other recent closures by local food-and-beverage operators.

And Your Mom’s Donuts announced last month that it will shut down all of its operations on Feb. 5. That includes its flagship location on Monroe Road in Matthews and a storefront at Park Road Shopping Center.

On the other hand, several new spots popped up across the area in January and some local restaurateurs unveiled expansion plans.

South End was the recipient of many of the new concepts, ranging from a four-in-one nightlife venue called RSVP at 225 Fairwood Ave. to Japanese bakery chain Papa Beard’s and its signature cream puffs at 222 West Blvd.
